Shrug or Die Vol. 1 #MixtapeReview (John John Da Don “JJDD”)

Battle rapper John John Da Don (JJDD) holds his fans down with Shrug or Die Vol. 1, his newly released mixtape. Battle rappers carry with them a stigma that they are lyrically talented but incapable of making songs, which JJDD disproves in Shrug or Die.

In his brazenly indulgent #IDGAF, #shruglife party mindset, JJDD is shameless and comfortable in his world.  The idea that #shruglife would be less than likely for a mature audience to entertain, becomes secretly admirable and enviable, for a reflective early-30’s Boom Bap head, when JJDD puts his passion into his pen.  The kid is nice!

I’ll admit that I need lyrics with a little more substance, but JJDD’s skill level and hunger makes me want to see him continue to grow as an artist.  His progression, content wise, will come with time and maturity, I hope.  Out of all the battle rappers I definitely think JJDD has the most star potential to crossover into becoming a successful artist and if he continues making good music he’ll lay the framework for the design of the rest of his career.

Shrug or Die has solid production, nice hooks, and an ambiguous sound that could have origins anywhere in the country.  With features from Jadakiss, T Waters, Lunch Money Gang, and more, Shrug or Die is a definite download.
